Spent the morning perusing the amazing Nagasaki Museum of History and Culture. I took a million notes and photos, and ooo-ed and aaa-ed over the exhibits. One highlight was taking a “digital” daguerreotype with this famous dude! (You had to stand really still for 15s)

Yup that’s a tallship at Dejimamachi Wharf. Yup, it has a smokestack and steam-propelled paddles on both sides. Yup, they always talk about Japan mixing the old and the new! 😜 Yup, it’s cool!

This is what they used to look like. Of course, once they got back to Japan and the shogun outlawed Christianity, these boys all suffered a pretty brutal fate: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tensh%C5%8D_embassy

Walked across a 1km bridge connecting the airport to the mainland to see this statue of Mancio Ito, Miguel Chijiwa, Juliao Nakaura and Martinao Hara. In 1582 these boys (Mancini was 12 at the time) travelled to the Vatican to meet the Pope! It was Japan’s first embassy to Europe

Since the appointment is in the afternoon, I cannot catch the 3 o’clock plane back, so have to stay over a night. At least I have an Islander card, which gives us discounts on travel within the prefecture.

Goodreads has a lot of structural problems (I’m a heavy user and librarian and have tried to leave it many times… but “network effects”). However the bigger challenge might be on the booksellers side. For example neither Downpour nor Audible even HAVE a public API!

Not sure how I would integrate libraries into this. That is always the first place I look for a book… slightly different CTA there. If I can’t find the book there, or if it is on hold forever and I need it now, I will then go to online stores (non-DRM first, then DRM’d last)

Scanning deals at various booksellers and comparing against a central list might be the better way, since you could generate a notification with an affiliate link to buy the book, rather than relying on the bookseller’s notification. Possible monetization?

Here’s what I want: a service that either syncs my Goodreads To Read shelf with all online bookstores I use that have a Wishlist feature, so that I can be notified if something I want is on sale.

Just goes to show how a young yt man perceives the police. I am much older/wiser now — and much more wary. A young cop showed up at my place last week for a routine 家庭訪問 and I was high tension… 😰

Only once in 8 yrs. Police stopped to ask about my papers & recent whereabouts — someone reported a theft in the area by an alleged gaijin. My wife (J-civil rights activist) was there to intervene preventing me from being too accommodating & helping myself into a pair of cuffs 😓
