Tomorrow I will cover one of the other Pillars of Heaven. In the meantime, please check out Saruiwa, one of the spectacular pillars keeping the “Living Island” in place. https://twitter.com/chadkoh/status/1284999746122321921

Yes for sure. I can see the port from my window. We are about 20 flat feet from the ocean. It was a real worry when all the rains hit last week. We were calculating the rainfall and the incoming tide, deciding on flood risk!

Totally spoiled to be on a small island with 2 of Japan’s top 100 white sand beaches! You can get basically anywhere within 20m… we go to beaches on the west side in the morning, and then east in the afternoon so there is always shade! 😉🤙

Nishikihama is a small white sand beach. It is pretty deep so you can scuba here. There is pretty much no one so it feels private today! Wind makes it nice and cool!

What about コンビニ running karaoke boxes? Is this a thing too? In 20 years in Japan I have never seen this until I came out to the 離島

Found this awesome sounding “sword shrine” on GMaps and drove up to check it out. Iki has lots of super narrow creepy overgrown roads… this video is wide angle… in reality it was more claustrophobic.
I turned back… I didn’t have my “snake stick!”

Pankaj Mishra delivers a shellacking to Anglo-American liberalism. His comparison of India’s non-rise to other Asian states, not to mention the hollowing out of state power in the US/UK, is valuable. Look at Kerala! India is like a diorama of the world. https://www.lrb.co.uk/the-paper/v42/n14/pankaj-mishra/flailing-states

The stegadon statue is in front of the Koganemaru Ikuhisa Memorial Hall. Koganemaru is a famous sculptor from Iki. Here are a few of his pieces on display. (all are lifesize, except the Meiji emperor who is 2x)

Just chillin’ with the local stegadon (not a mammoth and not a mastadon… they don’t have shaggy hair and their tusks go OUTWARD.) In 1971 stegadon bones were found on Iki.

I have spent a lot more time with Shin people (and volunteer for a group back in Canada) and tho “Evangelical” is technically accurate, it probably isn’t the right association if you are familiar with US Charismatic movements. (ie. don’t think of them in a US context)
