How do you like it? What kinds of switches? I have some Browns on mine… they are pretty soft but I didn’t want to get something TOO clacky since one of the reasons for the K2 was the backlight so I could work at night, and I didn’t want to wake the whole bloody house.

Perched on the windowsill bench reading. I love the feeling of being in a different city — exploring & discovering — but I also love curling up with a book. Something about reading in unfamiliar surroundings — revelling in the novelty as well as familiarity. Safely dangerous.

Our final stay in Nagasaki has a decent view. The front desk was on the 11th floor, and the furo is on the 12th! We are close to Chinatown. We are taking a little rest before going to dinner. 🍜🥟🥡🥢

Currently at the hypocenter of the Nagasaki Atomic Bomb Explosion. The black monolith points up, where at 500 meters on 8/9/1945 at 11:02 the bomb exploded killing a third of the city (75K) and injuring another third. At least 182k deaths have been attributed to the bomb.

The comment about slowing spending is spot on. Working in a PE-acquired firm really ties your hands. We couldn’t even buy milk for the office anymore, never mind invest in better infra to support growth, which is what was desired! https://twitter.com/doctorow/status/1286718594387075072

Tomorrow morning I will be popping by here: Ōura Cathedral, or The Basilica of the Twenty-Six Holy Martyrs of Japan. Built in the latter half of the 19th C, it was damaged by The Bomb (all good now I expect). This is a symbol for the Hidden Christians. Can’t wait to check it out!

The sign was a big green one on the corner of Davie and Thurlow that said “Sushi TO GO”. The store had a real name, but that sign was prominent. I tried looking it up on Streetview but now it is Transylvanian Traditionals. 🥖🥐🧛🏻♂️🤷🏽♀️

I set up a #timelapse to catch the #Nagasaki sunrise but woke up to see it caught the lightning storm, and how the rain on the windows deformed the city lights. Trippy!

When I lived in Vancouver a hundred years ago, there was a restaurant called “Sushi TOGO”.
I was like: wow they named their restaurant after the admiral that masterminded the Battle of Tsushima in 1905? That’s deep!
Only later did I figure out it was “To Go”

Just arrived in Karatsu port. In the back on the right you can see Karatsu Castle. This was a castle built after Sekigahara, so after the Warring States period. We are heading up there this afternoon.

Oh and Marko, just to clarify, I am talking about MS and HS in the US. There is lots more freedom in HE to allow for those types of shenanigans for sure. I dunno how much your research or CARDE’s work is done on “lower” ed.

Addressable market is one of the challenges, at least in the US. The fractured state of the market means you are dealing with quite small sets of data. So, if you are making a data play, you must have a product that is VERY general, and can be used across a bunch of contexts.

Replying to @markoteras
For the ed company I worked for, those were two big strategies. We dealt with a lot of “partners” and competitors that couldn’t use data because of various state laws, or level of tech. Some big VC-backed companies can do that, but I bet it is a small minority.

-
Some good pts in here, but I think they miss two things on the biz model: 1) not all edtech is about data, a lot is about accessing HUGE public funds and funneling it into PE or hedge fund pockets; 2) “free” is not about the data but about switching costs and lock-in. https://twitter.com/markoteras/status/1282641705171386369
