This place is super class. They have a Library & Bar to relax in. There is a collection of records which you can play on the turntable. Extra class points for the games area which has a Tanegashima matchlock arquebus!

Uploaded a few more pics of yesterday’s MASSIVE 伊勢海老 Japanese spiny lobster at dinner. Also, the chef gave the kids some raw fish meat to throw into the aquarium and feed the other fish. Check the video!

I still haven’t settled in a mic, but I want to do more of this to add flavour to photos of locations I post. I did a simple one on this post: https://chadkohalyk.com/2020/07/20/saruiwa/

One last comment before we can put this to rest (at least for now). I was talking with an official who said that since Okinawa just shut down, 160 Kyoto 中学生 are headed to Iki for their 修学旅行。So, it is a pretty good second option! 👌

Of course, this might not apply at all to your family trip. Apparently Okinawa has good resorts just for relaxing too.
If you have people interested in Jomon/Yayoi or in the Kojiki, Iki would definitely be top on the list to visit if you were coming south. 👍

We have taken our kids to all of these places (Hiroshima, Nagasaki, Okinawa). It comes in handy when in Canadian school they stalk about Pearl Harbour and and everyone turns to look at them… we also want to take them to Korea, Taiwan, and China at some point, to give them 360°

Furthermore, they need to see Japan from the Okinawa perspective as a ヤマトンチュウ — to understand the oppression outside of the war, and the damage Okinawa took to protect the mainland.

My wife was in Okinawa and Ishigaki with the kids last year, so I asked her the same question. She had a really good answer: every Japanese person needs to go to Okinawa at least once. Like Hiroshima and Nagasaki, it is an important place to understand historically.

One of the best things Iki has going for it is that it is just an hour on the jetfoil to Fukuoka. So you can get the big city, beachy island, cool historical spots, and shopping all in one trip.

It is surprisingly cool here… I mean, it is 34 with 95% humidity, but the wind makes it feel milder than say… Kyoto, which is a burning cauldron of concrete and people.

I haven’t been to Okinawa in more than 20 years (we are planning to go within the next year, but you know … Corona) so my comparison is probably not the best. Where I really WANT to go next in terms of tropical islands in Japan is Amami-Oshima.

Iki is much more rough, much more country. If you like camping and fewer people, and to avoid the US military rowdying it up in the streets of Naha at 2am, then Iki is for you.

Okinawa is much more tropical, since it is quite a bit further south. And it is much more developed as a tourist destination, since it has been the “Hawaii of Japan” for a long time. Also they have a nightlife there.
