Took a 4K 60fps vid of the marble clock from yesterday at the top of the hour when most of the action is. Enjoy! https://youtu.be/HbugnRWGUzI

I watched the show based on @ProZD’s recommendation. It’s really as good as he says! So of course I wanted to visit Omi while in Kyoto. So dragged the wife, kids, and grandpa out here

Over in the Kangakukan there is tons of Chihayafuru stuff. They have a little souvenir store.
There were kids upstairs practicing karuta!

Inside Fuyoen. Very nice tofu lunch, surrounded by a garden and pond, small “waterfall” and a cave in the old wall to hide in if your enemies attack!

Currently in Shiga prefecture. Lunch at Fuyoen, located at the foot of Hiei-zan and surrounded by temples.

In about 2 weeks I am going to spend a few days in Fukuoka and stop by Startup Cafe and maybe make some connections… really difficult to network in the age of corona…

Yeah we arrived in Japan the day before flights were stopped in Canada! And being on Iki we are out of the way of the virus too and can conduct a pretty normal life. Totally thrown my plan to write a Kyushu travelogue though! Still doing the research, but have to change the angle

Yeah I get that. My old consultancy I started while I was here, but things are a little more complicated after going back to Canada and doing a few startups.
Thanks for the offer by the way. Will keep it in mind once things start getting serious. I am still on my year off…

Side question, but how are you bringing money into J to finance things? (These are super basic questions, but I never started something international here before)

I was thinking more about the banking situation. Don’t want my bank accounts raided if I am away longer than a few months

Thinking similar things, but between Canada and Japan. Unfortunately, with me going back and forth (if corona lets up), I am worried I will be dinged for the residency requirement here. Might have to set up in Canada. Anyone have experience?

Yeah this is the chance for the leadership here to try and fix things. It is hard to change direction with the money flowing… but there is a lot of damage to cleanup. All the empty hotels that have plonked down in the city for one.

Made it to Kyoto. We spent an hour in Fukuoka having a late lunch and shopping a little. With that it took about 8 hours door-to-door from Iki. If you took the jetfoil and didn’t spend time in Hakata, it would be 6 probably.

Japan was always the “top of the bottom” of the racial hierarchy once they started hiring lots of Brits to modernize in 19C.
I’ve been researching the Yamato conquering of the Kumano and Hayato peoples in Kyushu, extending Yamato rule over the southern isles. It goes way back…

In the past few years I have been trying to shift focus outside of Kyoto (where I have been based for a long time) and it has been very interesting to learn more about the variety in Japan. I appreciate efforts to spotlight it!

Wow! You aren’t kidding about messy. TBH I was hoping it would be more on Japan. I have been working on Kyushu history (a whole ton of violent displacement from different directions here) and only learned about attitudes toward the ヤマトンチュー maybe last year(?).
