I dunno if anyone wants to read a 3,200 word account of my first typhoon experience, but I wrote it anyways. If you scroll to the bottom, there is a list of lessons learned that might be useful. http://chadkohalyk.com/2020/09/08/first-island-typhoon-experience/

@SengokuPodcast Just dropping a note of appreciation. Discovered the show a couple weeks ago. On Ep 11 now (Journey to Yamato) and really enjoying it. I moved to Iki in May, so have been digging into early history, and your show has helped! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Storm has passed and we have some blue sky. There is lots of debris on the road, and we found another victim of the storm: our cornfield! 🌽 😢 we had about 15 at a field up on the hill. Flattened. #ikijima #壱岐 #Haishen

How were things up in your area?

Most people packed up and left the evac center. The wind was slowing down and there was no rain. So we came home too. Walk around the house shows no damage. #Haishen hasn’t completely passed, but we are safe #ikijima #壱岐

Looks nice! Now time for damage assessment… we here in Iki are still getting hit. Probably need a couple more hours before we can get outside.

As the eye passes by the wind and rain are really whipping out there! Unfortunately there isn’t anything too dramatic to film. Pretty much everyone is still sleeping at the evac center. I don’t think we had and power outs all night, but they say there were some across the island.

Currently I am sitting outside in the cool wind. It is a little strong, but there is no rain at this point. Just cooling down, alone with my thoughts. It is pretty hot inside the evac center. #Haishen #ikijima #壱岐

It’s about lights out here on #Ikijima #壱岐 as #Haishen approaches in the night. It is quite warm in the evac Center so we have lots of fans. Luckily it is not full, and everyone has lots of space. The windows are slightly open for ventilation and we have some big AC units. 🌛

Got all our essentials and have moved into our 2m x 3m space at the gym. #Haishen is speeding up so it will hit us earlier in the morning than we thought. By the morning it may have passed, then we will go check for damage. 🤞 #ikijima #壱岐

Been going back and forth to the evac center checking up on things. Not even half full yet. Everyone is taking coronavirus precautions. City staff have everything organized well. The worst will be the heat when the power goes out and we lose AC. #ikijima #壱岐 #haisen

Not everyone is going to the evac Center. Our house is right beside the port with nothing protecting it on 3 sides. Worried about flying objects more than anything. Neighbours a few houses in are staying. #ikijima #壱岐 #haisen

Townsfolk are getting antsy… so we have started setting up at the evac Center. Looks like #haishen is speeding up and will hit us in the night #ikijima #壱岐

Wind really blowing in #ikijima #壱岐 already. Watching James down south while we watch the news and pack up supplies. #haishen has picked up speed so it will be here earlier than expected. We might have to evac tonight. https://twitter.com/EarthUncutTV/status/1302372262134177792

Tons of people at the Aeon. Never seen the parking lot so full! Bottled water is all out… lots of other supplies out. We were advised to pull up some tatami and use it to support our front doors from the inside!

This essay has been highly recommended today, on the day of @davidgraeber’s death. Read it in mourning. It is wonderful, with some great lines, eg:
“it gives us ground to unthink the world around us."
Live life! 🤗 Have fun! 🤟

Are there any explanatory notes for this poem? I am familiar with all the place names (visited in 2004), but the symbolism of things like “fifteen” … as an outsider I don’t get the reference. Thank you! 🙇♂️

Reiterating what is already in the thread, but I used Scriv for my master’s and it was great.
This time around I’m using Roam to “take smart notes”, and my chapter-writing is in Ulysses, which is like a very lightweight and modern Scriv.

Just pulled down all the cardboard from the inside of the windows, went outside and put away all the rain shutters, and completed a walkaround of the house and car. All good!👍A LOT of wind last night, and the power went out about 3 times, but that was about it for #TyphoonMaysak
