So far fav part of this hotel is this translation by Long John Silver! Wish I had noticed this when we arrived since the 19th was #TalkLikeAPirateDay! Fancy the idea of a hotel where all the signs be like this 🏴☠️

Sorry mate, looks like dad’s pajamas. It’s like he pulled on some shorts before running out on the lawn in his sandals to yell at the neighbourhood kids for messing with the sprinkler! Even got the white socks! 3/10

You picked three greats! I only spent 24hrs in NYC a long time ago, but it has always been a special place (maybe coz I never lived there?). O’ahu changed me for sure, spiritually & politically. But for me of course, Kyoto is the best 🙌 In fact, I will be back in a few days!

Imari. At the bottom is the train we arrived on. Way over on the left you can see the bay. Just beyond that, further out in the water is where Mongol invader ships were capsized due to storm in the 14th C. A lot of undersea archeological work going on over there.

Today we have been wandering around Imari, a place famous for its porcelain. After the Ming Dynasty collapsed Imari ware became popular, even in Europe, in the 17th C. Also, it’s the birthplace of the Morinaga Caramel guy!

On the port side of the boat is Okinoshima, the island where ancient Japanese rulers stored up to 80k pieces of treasure from as far away as Persia. On the starboard side you can see the nuclear power plant that powers Nagasaki prefecture. #japan

On the lower decks, close to the water keeping an eye out. They say there are lots of flying fish in the area, and sometimes you can see them jumping alongside the boat.

As a non-American this seems very American: don’t like your country? Move! It’s how the country was founded right? 😜
In seriousness, there is a regionalism here isn’t there? There is a place=class dynamic … but I feel like I hear these calls to “escape” from specific areas 🤔

Itoshima is great! Lots of layers there. In the 3rd C Queen Himiko designated that area as the only point that foreigners from Wei could stop at. They weren’t even allowed inland, and had to conduct all their trade there. It was like the “Dejima” of Yamatai times! 🌀

The thing I always enjoy about living here is how the historical intertwines with the present. I suppose that is an anodyne thing to say, but compared to Canada, the history is so deep that I can’t walk around the block without discovering something else! 😄

Also, it was learning more about Okinawa (and ironically Hawai’i) that helped me break out of the Kyoto bubble. I still love Kyoto of course, but I want to see more of Japan’s diversity!

That’s the plan! We were originally going to go to Tanegashima, but it was a bit far. I still plan on hitting there, Tsu, Goto, Hirado, but also go back to Okinawa and try Amami. 離島 are pretty fascinating actually. I never knew about it until I came. The value of travel!

Nice shout. That certainly catches the mood. Being in the Kyoto Bubble for so long, I never really paid attention. It has been really rewarding so far.
How was that book for more general Kyushu info? Or was it tightly focused on shugendo? Wondering which pile to put it on…

Currently reading about how Ashikaga came here before the fall of the Kamakura, and how the 南北戦争 played out in Kyushu. Had no idea!
Kyushu has a lot of Firsts when it comes to Japan, which is what made me start this project. But I’m finding a lot of historical Too’s as well.

People in Japan usually have a Tokyo-centric or Kansai-centric view of the country and its history. But man so much important stuff happened in Kyushu to support what was going on in the other capitals! Thinking of titling my book “Kyushu: The Far Off Center of Japan” 😂
