The other advice I got is to ask to apply as a “visiting scholar” at a local university. Gonna hafta figure out how to do that.

Yep. And as an alum (did my undergrad there) I get access to paper books, but no inter library loans or web access to journals etc. Which sucks since I am in the field right now 😢

As a sessional lecturer at UBC I *still* didn’t get any access. Someone suggested I register for a grad program and just stretch it out for a long long time… seems expensive. 🤷♂️

Pen Shūji is shodō in miniature form… like netsuke is for sculpture, or cameos are for portrait painting. Achieving beauty within the constraints of the miniature is the appeal of this artform. So cool!

Since you hooked me up with a digital version before, I thought I might ask you if UHP has a digital version of “Kaempfer’s Japan: Tokugawa Culture Observed” out there is that is NOT on Google Books? I’d love to buy an epub direct from you if possible. Thx!

I know this has been said before, but I must say it again: one of the biggest downsides of being an “independent scholar” is not being able to get access to journal articles. 30£ for an article I am not even sure I can get value out of? 😢

I had no idea that the version of UNBEATEN TRACKS that we all know was “an abridged version” to make her writing more “feminine” resulting in a book half the length and “encrusted with misunderstandings.” Revealing article: https://twitter.com/nippon_en/status/1299542292521463809

This building is Sengokuso, an onsen ♨️ near Yunomoto Bay. The light on the old brick building this morning looked really cool, but I think the B/W really brings out the textures.

Obviously, these little beasties are fished all over the place, but with so much action happening around Ise historically, it doesn’t surprise me that they would be called that (and that they would totally ignore Kyushu ebi, which are obviously superior 😉)

Apparently the Ise-Shima area is a big spot for spiny lobsters, something about the local ecology. The long antennae are a symbol of long life, and these things are in high season in the winter, so they are put in lots of New Years food. Ise Jingu is a hotspot for New Years.

We had Ise Ebi in Ise last year when we were visiting the Jingu, but they weren’t anywhere the size of the ones I have seen here on Iki. Apparently the ones that they catch in the Tsushima strait are all huge.

Oh man I have Piranesi downloaded but haven’t started it yet. I thought about doing a S&N reread, but there are too many other good books I have listed (even though I LOVED that book).
Would you be interested in doing a bit of a Piranesi co-read/bookclub?
