Exactly. I always use Portland’s downtown as an example. The limitation of large chains, the vision to keep money in the local economy, and to make things livable for residents. Kerr talks about limiting “bus tourism” and to go for more deeper experiences. Quality over quantity.

Well, if you can get a handle on the first three, you might be able to increase the numbers. Point is: proper planning has been lacking, and the people are rightly pissed.

Jeebus. Well, the first thing they gotta do is stop tearing stuff down and building hotels.
Recently the mayor said they were gonna take this opportunity to rethink, right? They need to do it now while the money waterfall is turned off and people can focus.

I haven’t been keeping up, but it’s my understanding that financially Kyoto is in the red, and with all the big companies moving to Shiga or Osaka, they don’t have much of a corporate tax base. And it is expensive to run Kyoto. Was this the problem tourism was supposed to solve?

I was ready to toss em all out, but I am no tourism scholar. Alex wrote a whole book on the topic, so he has done much more thinking on this: https://www.amazon.co.jp/-/en/%E3%82%A2%E3%83%AC%E3%83%83%E3%82%AF%E3%82%B9%E3%83%BB%E3%82%AB%E3%83%BC-ebook/dp/B07R3CFNN2/ref=mp_s_a_1_2?dchild=1&keywords=%E6%97%A5%E6%9C%AC+%E8%A6%B3%E5%85%89+%E3%82%A2%E3%83%AC%E3%83%83%E3%82%AF%E3%82%B9%E3%82%AB%E3%83%BC&qid=1606720490&sr=8-2
I am not sure I would label him as a neoliberal…

Yeah, he talks about that. His beef is that the authorities have done NOTHING to manage the flows, and that is what needs reform. He gives examples. He thinks Japan can actually handle a lot more. I am no tourism specialist tho, but we can’t go back to what we had before.

Picked up Ajahn Chah’s “Food for the Heart” again for my before bedtime reading. Helps me calm down. Each chapter is like a podcast ep, a teaching. I think I am in need to go on retreat… been a while. 🙏📿🧎🏼

Here in Iki the (main) beaches are quite clean. Only the occasional nagaremono from Korea 😉 We always compare it to our experience at Suma way back in 2003… there was a million people and you had to step over a meter’s width of garbage to get into the water! 😜

First time at Suma, 20yrs ago, I was shocked at the garbage. I was waist deep out by a pier, and surrounded by all these gelatin packs that look like what they use for breast implants. My GF yelled at me “Karaage! Karaage!” and I was like WTCluck? 🐔 Turns out it it was “kUrage”

I had no idea about this place. When I found out, I saw lots of amazing pics of the gorge. Looking forward to visiting! I’ve only been to Miyazaki-shi to visit a friend (using the 18 kippu!) and see summer fireworks. Maybe 2003?

I love the colours/comp on the yellow and blue car images. Usually when I take a wide shot like that, there is so much happening that it is all a mess. These have such good balance — even tho there are lots of details my eye looks across the image like it is following a story. 👍
