Usually we think of Japan as the last stop for Buddhism in Asia, the end of the line, and not really contributing in the other direction.

Hmmm… I know that Japan was looked to by mainland Asia, especially by anti colonialist and nationalist thinkers, as an example of “modernization”, but I didn’t know it was regarded a center for Buddhism…

Fascinating interview. Have you ever come across Buddhist thinkers from Japan interacting with S. China Sea Buddhism? Wondering if there are any connections in the post or even pre-colonial eras. For example, cultural contacts above and beyond economic/development relations?

A long time ago, I was about 40kms away from the village depicted in this film. I recall the azure sky, the sharp sunlight and dark shadows of the Pamirs. It was breathtaking (see some of my photos). In grad school I covered Tajikistan for my regional studies class. Fascinating.

But no fancy archives, or rockstar shakuhachi players, or intellectual salons to discuss politics in the colonies or anything like that. Lots of fishing tho (I don’t fish). Sunrises, sunsets, and ocean views can’t be beat tho!

Once we get back to Kyoto I look forward to being able to access a bunch more stuff. Archives and the like a few and far between here on Iki. We have a nice museum (which I started volunteering at) and I can request books from the prefectural library…

Once my kids grow up I am DEFINITELY not going to be the type of person that feels lost and ends up sitting on the couch all day watching game shows. However, despite all the extra time I am certain I will DEFINITELY be procrastinating on my pile of unwritten projects. 👍

Whoa! That sounds cool!
I suppose “research” is another possible hobby. People read/write books in their spare time. I have met many secret history nerds. But I do that all day (at least, right NOW I do) — except when I am on Twitter! 😉

I suppose when it comes down to it, I want to be a total NERD for something, but I don’t want it to be about Marvel movies or Dungeons & Dragons (not that there is anything wrong with that, those are MY nerds, but I want something with a bit more… legacy?).

Yeah that’s the appeal to me of shodo. It Venn’s with improving my Japanese as well as Buddhism. I always wanted to do 写経! Also admire it as an art form. I follow shodoka on Twitter!
Tea also appeals as it overlaps with all of these things. It’s a gateway drug to refinement.

That’s brilliant. I don’t know about clarinet and sax, but shakuhachi appeals to me like tea does… my image is it is 奥深い 🤷♂️ I might be displaying my ignorance. I listen to a lot of jazz which is certainly 奥深い

Considerations:
- Tea
- Shodo
- Piano
- Chess (just finished Queen’s Gambit)
- Japanese (lost a lot in my 10 years away)
The last is probably the most practical option. But I think I am looking for something CULTURAL, as opposed to a skill.

I’m at this middle-aged-crisis crossroad where I’ve been considering learning again, picking up a skill to last into my old age (side note: currently recovering from 2 judo-induced rib injuries). It is the curse of the generalist — the dilettante — to admire the skilled.
