It would be freighter travel for sure. About 17 days from Yokohama to Vancouver and the prices are quite a bit less than an airplane ride. I would feel more comfortable on a big bulk carrier than on a little sailing boat like how Greta travels!

Another thing I appreciate about this article is that it points out that there are different options for different countries. Consider your location and country’s state of industrial development in your climate change choices is important. 👍

Top options on that chart:
🙅👶 have fewer children
🙅🚗 living car-free
🙅🛫 avoiding air travel
🙅🍖 eating vegetarianToo late for the kids, but Dec 28 is my 5yr anniversary of going veg 🥗, never owned a car… and we are seriously considering taking a ship back to Canada.

Here is the data from the original article https://iopscience.iop.org/article/10.1088/1748-9326/aa7541/meta
This can be helpful in setting some priorities, Eg knowing that going vegetarian is 8x more effective than upgrading lightbulbs.

This article had a stimulating little quiz which demonstrates just how off our judgements are on climate choices. Yes we are not rational calculating machines, but we should have a better sense of these tradeoffs. Like literacy and numeracy… climatacy? https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2020/08/30/climate/climate-footprint-quiz.html?referringSource=articleShare

Jinmenseki-kun is all Xmas’d up at the museum today. The 人面石 is a small stone worked into a face dug up at Haranotsuji here on #ikijima #壱岐 It dates back about 2000 years and is thought to be used in the religious ceremonies of the Yayoi. Really nice view from the roof!

On Canada’s census there is a spot where you write down the languages your household speaks at home. I have never done the Japanese census. Do they have anything like this? Canada has some pretty complex language and immigration politics so, it might be a special case.

Good point on residents ≠ immigrants.
The other approach is to find heritage language schools, but I can imagine many of these are informal and not necessarily tabulated anywhere.
Wonder if there is a specialist out there researching heritage language education in Japan?

Where would I find this data? I looked around on http://stats.go.jp but only found general population info. Ideally I would like to find ethic info like Ainu, Ryukyu, Zainichi, then naturalized, then residents.

Hōjōki has the admirable qualities of being both ruminative AND short, so it makes it easy to come back to when a new translation appears. Read my full take here: https://www.writersinkyoto.com/2020/12/hojoki-a-personal-response/ https://twitter.com/matthew_stavros/status/1338018307740291072

Trying to come up with a list of top immigrant heritage language groups in Japan, but having a tough time finding a list by country of Japan’s 2.3m+ international migrant population. http://Stats.go.jp doesn’t seem to have anything. Anyone know where I can find such info? 🙏
