They kind of taste like Elephant Ears/Saddle Blankets/Beaver Tails that you would get at the fair. You DEFINITELY do not need to drawn them in whipped cream and chocolate sauce like my addict children

Turns out he is from Fukuoka and works on the ferry route. On the way to Tsushima he fainted on the boat, so they dropped him off here in Ashibe. He tested positive. This is our first case for 4 months. Most of our cases date back to March (total 13).

Just had the announcement over the island emergency system. Seems like 5 new cases of coronavirus discovered on Iki on the 28th. 1 person is in hospital. No info on the other 4 (assuming self-isolating?). There are only 4 corona beds on the island in total. #ikijima #壱岐 #壱岐島

Not of this specific case. Saw a piece in JT a couple days ago talking about Kansai post-corona, and it mentioned privatization ideas coming up in Kyoto. SMH

Just to be clear, this is me facepalming the Kyoto admin, not you! I saw the comments before about privatizing various things to “balance the budget” earlier. Terrible!

Sneak peek of my piece called “On Location.” Features some of my photography from around #ikijima #壱岐 and Kyushu. I had to dig really deep for this essay, examining myself and the question “why I travel?” 2/3

We cancelled our trip home a while back. We thought about going to Aso, way out in the country, but would have to take a ship, so decided just to sit still on our island. Jiji is alone in Kyoto for the first time (Baba passed away in March, not of corona).

Yeah we are in the final phases (They are 11 and almost 9). I basically FORCED them to watch Christmas films every night in the run up to get spirit. This is our first Xmas in Japan, and my parents always were the big providers of atmosphere back in Canada.

We actually slimmed it down a lot this year. Basically each kid got a big/expensive present, a small present, and then basically just wrapped up a bunch of different snacks/treats that we normally don’t allow. It worked out pretty well since nothing will go to waste.

The northern tip of the island is where Hideyoshi built a castle as a staging point for Korea. Apparently they had brought a lot of Kyoto girls for entertainment, so Katsumoto-Ben has a lot of Kyoto-Ben in it. The shotengai is *very* Kyoto looking now to reinforce that heritage.

I still don’t know the rules for ケン and ト. I did Linguistics at uni so I am usually pretty quick to pick up on those things. Iki has its own hōgen… there are even differences between the four main areas of the island!

We arrived in Japan on Dec 31st, and in the morning the hotel served osechi at the buffet. I mixed it up with some tater tots.🍘 We visited relatives and scouted Iki before returning to Canada. The next time we came back to Japan was in the early days of covid. What a year… https://twitter.com/dmoren/status/1341912653212643329

I mean, didn’t Gargamel literally WANT the blood of the Smurfs?

Look up “slow travel” on the web to find options. There is an amazing amount holiday stuff I never would of thought of, plus regular transport options. The REAL binds of globalization are freighters.

You can if you like. Generally freighters have two messes, one for officers and one for crew. Based on the book I read, the passengers had a choice of which.

Just read a book about a guy who took his family overland from BC to Zanskari Buddhist temple, through Korea, China, Tibet, and Nepal. Their freighter had wifi… a pool and sauna… and a karaoke room! 🎤
