Funny how everyone stops when the announcement chime starts…
Have you had any weird announcements before?
For us there was a bunch of warnings to prep your pipes before overnight freezing.

Is this just a 地方 thing? I never saw them in Kyoto or Nagoya. Or are they just a newer thing? The reading I did made it seem like it was something that only started rolling out nationwide in 2007. But the older one on our wall looks way older than that.

Jealous!? I didn’t move to a tropical island from Canada to have to shovel my walk! 🤪
Fun seeing the neighbour kids out playing it it though. “Does it wash off?” 😂 So cute!

What does “centrally” mean here? Not “centralized”? For example in Canada a large portion of emissions from the beef industry is due to transport.

I use Messages mostly tbh. But Signal is a good bridging app. There is a desktop app you can sync to like WhatsApp, and there are calls and video chat and groups etc. And they are good people.

I have used Signal for a long time, with a select few friends. I only picked up WhatsApp a couple years ago because that is what everyone in India was using. I have a couple of Android friends, so we used that. I am getting them to come over to Signal which is pretty similar.

Nagasaki Pref upgraded to Phase 4 and implemented a soft lockdown until Jan 17th, asking citizens to not travel out of the prefecture, or have meals in large groups. 55% of cases come from interacting with out of towners, and 13% from eating out.

Exactly. So it has been nice these past few months. Most of our cases came in Mar. since then things have been basically normal on the island. But once it gets here, there is one main hospital, lots of elderly people, and only 1 Aeon. Have to be careful!

With just 46 cases Iki is in Phase 4. Small islands are dangerous. To give you perspective, by only doubling that number we will have the same case load as Kyoto who have 5000 sick! But they have much more medical capacity, so are still in a lower emergency phase.

We are basically staying in the house… only going to the farm since it is easy to social distance there. We are waiting for the schools to be shut down. If they lock down the island things will be fixed quickly…

Things have changed in that you can find more tech skepticism, but it is still a minority, so the above is still relevant. However, I think the main core of tech criticism has been folded into anti-capitalist critiques, as has Evgeny himself in recent years. Agree?

Unrelated but it is really weird seeing people on screen getting together in big groups to watch fireworks, or crowding into an underground club, nobody wearing masks. Like when you used to see reruns of Friends or old movies and the Twin Towers were still standing. Before Times.

It is a well done documentary, covering a lot of perspectives which I appreciate. I totally empathize with the parents.
The film feels a bit old, since it has been a decade since production. Japan has changed/not-changed since then. What will it be like a decade from now?

We talk about this as a family all the time. A few years ago we saw another film about mixed Japanese abroad (I even shouted out @hafufilm in that post!). Even now we actively encourage the kids to compare their experiences here in Iki to Canada.

Watched @hafufilm finally. I am not mixed but my kids are obviously. We were very conscious of this when we moved to Canada when my oldest was 1. We are trying to raise them to be proud of their heritages, to stand up for themselves, and to have no regrets.
