It is very recommended (also very not appropriate for children). A slow burn. Actually motivated me to read the book it is based on.

Got my 8 year old a chessboard for Xmas. I hadn’t played for years. We play every night. It is great, we are both getting better. We even started watching some How To’s.

There is a local NPO trying to refurb these houses and rent them to remote workers. Rent around here averages 2/3man. Watching them wrangle with owners and come up with schemes that fits to everyone’s tastes has been interesting. I am gonna write something about it.

Here is a map of our village. Marked in red are the properties that are 空き家。Quite a big %. People won’t rent or sell because it is in there family, or there are 5 siblings and there isn’t agreement on selling, etc etc. Pretty common in rural areas.

So, my question is: in 2021, what is the gov angle to promoting home ownership? Especially considering Derek’s earlier discussion about house valuations in Japan. As a lifelong renter, and considering how cheap rent here is compared to Canada, I don’t get it 🤷♂️

Unrelated to the main thrust of the thread (thanks for that) but I saw something (maybe in JT?) recently that argued that LDP has been advocating for more private home ownership. I dunno if they are thinking this is as a “retirement investment”… Have you seen anything on this?

Is this a comment from a possible customer? Or investor?
I assume you asked for constructive feedback from them about why the “similar” is a such a strong offering and not worth competing with, or what it is missing, or who it isn’t serving that it COULD serve if only “XYZ”?

It’s all about the execution. If the pre-existing “similar thing” is not a monopoly, then there is room for innovation.

Possibly could be bigger than social. There are shouts that this decision is now a national security issue for every OTHER country. It has made the case stronger for a “splinternet,” a sentiment that has been around for years, but only partially acted upon.

Will a post-pandemic world see a spreading out of humanity? A decentralized populace is more resilient to future pandemics & people have been trying to push for more remote work from rural locations. I lay out a few of the +/-s based on my experience here

Also, her student project sounds fascinating. I worked at APU in Beppu a couple of times, while I was doing web PR for Rits. That was 20 years ago and we were seeing mostly Chinese and SE Asian students. Curious to know how that has developed.
