In celebration of cracking 1K followers, on their request, I took my camera and some kids out for a little adventure. Today is pretty hazy (farmers burning) so no good ocean pix. First was Ryujashin Shrine, just off the coast, with its cool rock formations

Hello new followers 👋 I am 🇨🇦 who moved to Ikijima w/ my 2 small 👯♀️ on the 離島留学 program to experience Kyushu. I tweet about all the things (https://chadkohalyk.com/about/) but mostly post pics of beaches with tidbits on Kyushu history. I take ideas seriously, but I am not serious!

Almost at 1000 followers. I feel like I should be doing something special like giving something away. Unfortunately, considering how eclectic my stream is, I don’t what The People want. I don’t have any swag, and, probably nobody wants my bad puns. 🤔

👧🏻 Why do they put sugar in the medicine? Is there bad stuff in the sugar?
👱🏻♂️ No! The sugar IS the bad stuff!
👧🏻 Then why do they put it in the medicine?
👱🏻♂️ To make it taste good!
👧🏻 Then why do they need medicine!?
👱🏻♂️ Because they eat too much sugar!

Just the other day I reposted my piece on “danshari”, the Japanese minimalism concept. For more on how to get out of this system see some of my writing on downsizing, the debt trap, teaching children minimalism, tiny living, and more https://chadkohalyk.com/category/downsizing/

“Hashtag realtalk” but I think about that kind of stuff all the time, not only as a 42 year old with kids, but also someone who spends a lot of *active* time in reflection (I wrote up a blog post about journaling this morning to be published later!).

I had heard that these days manga and anime are all the rage in Japanese Studies classes. It probably wouldn’t be too tough to put together such a course. I imagine it would be pretty popular. Maybe have the students work together on a piece as a group project 🤔

“Man of Peace” on the life of the Dalai Lama is a work of love and art. If I recall, it took the artist 20years to hand paint all the panels! My image of Zhou Enlai is heavily influenced by that book 😅

I will certainly take a look! Thank you for bringing it to my attention. I’m not a manga reader per se, but manga is a great medium for providing overviews. 「日本の歴史」などは最高です!I think a philosophy one would be great.

Actually, thinking about it a little more, Tezuka’s BUDDHA was amazing. The way that he could visualize a concept was striking (thinking about the scene at the beginning with the rabbit). The key tho, is the visual aid in these complex stories.
