Difficult to celebrate this occasion considering all the hell the world has gone through, but I am sure glad looking back. We have been relatively free on our lucky island. #gratitude
Thanks for following us on our adventure! 4/4

It took a couple more months before we could make it to Ikijima. We huddled in our apartment in Kyoto and completely missed the cherry blossom season going on outside. 3/4

We got out of Canada Just days before they shut down all flights. Since we had moved out of house at the end of Feb, I dunno what we would have done if we weren’t able to leave.
But we made it on the plane. Things were very tense. 2/4

I was at Purebred Kyoto somewhere around 2004 for a year or two. It was my first BJJ gym. Enson was always nice when he came down. One highlight was a seminar with Yuki Nakai.

In closing, my experience was on the very edge, the tiniest ripple almost the furthest from the emotional epicentre. But I will be pausing today at 2:46PM to remember those lost, and the continuing struggle. I hope you will too. 🙏

10 years on, I am in Japan. We plan to visit Fukushima during summer break. The media keeps the memories alive, but I’m more touched by the remembrances of friends — old & new — that were here on that terrible day, and did the work, volunteering & contributing.

5 years later we were living in Kelowna and at a local Japan-related event I put together a short film to remind Canadians about what happened, and what was STILL happening with regards to displaced people and ongoing cleanup. A sobering reminder.

My wife+daughter came back to Canada in mid April. I was SO relieved they were back! But it would take months, if not years, for me to realize how scarred my wife was (not to mention the whole country).

I worked with a bunch of Canadian Apple employees and Apple stores to make a video message to send to colleagues back in Japan. We fundraised, and walking around Vancouver there were shops and people all over collecting for the Red Cross. (Some pics from then)

They were in Kyoto, but still, this thing was HUGE and nobody was sure about the fallout from the nuclear power plant. I was worried about many friends and coworkers. It had only been 6 months since transferring from Apple Japan to Apple Canada.

10 years ago I was alone in Vancouver working long hours because my wife+daughter were visiting Japan for spring break. Hearing about the earthquake, which soon turned into the “Triple Disaster”, I was glued to the news… I remember how nervous I felt.

Yes! I am very interested in the trials & tribulations of island living having experienced it. There are lots of layers, eg in East Asia there is the whole security angle and ensuring remote islands are populated to protect EEZ claims. Not a common issue for Sunshine Coast! 😊
