Good morning! Beautiful day. Today is a day of extremes. I have been driving straight for a long time… and now I I am going up into the twisty mountain roads! Up there is a very important “first” for Kyushu and Japan. Hint: it’s green and leafy

Been fun to watch you fuss with the eggs… but it probably is a good idea not to give into “egg influencer” instincts just yet.

I did my undergrad in Linguistics (language acquisition) and I can’t believe how all of that stuff is so out of date. We took our kids out of Japan (for more reasons than language) and I have gone through a number of stages of thinking about my kids En+Ja http://chadkohalyk.com/2021/02/16/raising-kids-in-multiple-languages/

Wrote this last month. It is a bit of a different case, since we left Japan to raise our kids in native English, but it shows some different frameworks for lang acquisition, and some challenges http://chadkohalyk.com/2021/02/16/raising-kids-in-multiple-languages/

The weather started to clear as I visited the museum at the old Saga Castle. Nabeshima Naomasa, the daimyo during the Meiji Restoration is a total HERO here.

The Tsukushi plain is the biggest on all of Kyushu. It is flat and wide, so streets are long and strait. Everything is BIG. Saga is also known for industry. So even their 鹿威し are hardcore!

I’ve driven this route a number of times now. I grew up in the Rockies, so it is comforting to be swaddled in mountains. Today’s weather makes it feel more boxed in. LOTR “Misty Mountains” is rumbling in my head. I will be climbing one of these tomorrow, but it should be clear.

Just pulled into Karatsu Bay. Ride was smooth, but the pouring rain and most obscured the view. You can barely see Karatsu Castle

CURRENT STATUS: Packing 💼
Off to Saga tomorrow. I’ll criss-cross that prefecture on the hunt for more #kyushufirsts before driving down to Mt Aso to check out the volcano. If you have recommendations, let me know 🙇♂️
Be prepared for many travel photos starting tomorrow 📸❗

When you look at a Mucha display, you have to check it from different angles. Even after a hundred years the gold and silver ink still shine!

About 10 years ago I was asked to participate in an workshop to find new ways to engage with alumni. I brought this dream up, but soon realized “engage” really meant “one-way transaction of monetary assets” 😉💸

It has been a longtime dream of mine for academia to figure out how to interact with the wider network of “citizen” or “independent” academics. Astronomy does a good job at this. https://twitter.com/SzendiChelsea/status/1371345765512015873

How the red peeks through the little pits, it makes me think like it is a strawberry wearing a mask, or like a mummy wrapped up. Bit creepy I suppose. But, we should not fear fruit that is a slightly different colour than we are used to!
