By 7 the sun is already high in the sky and sunrise is over. So bright that you can’t see it is a perfectly blue and cloudless sky this morning. #ikijima #壱岐

Enjoyed the opening session for #AAS2021. This is my first time attending. I marked down all the sessions I want to go to, and BOY am I glad this is done digitally because there is no way I would be able to physically attend all of these! The internet is my Time-Turner!

Catch up day today. 6 days off the island. Drove 900 kms through 4 prefectures. Visited 4 museums, and a ton of historical places. Made some new friends along the way. Took about 1000 photos and videos which I have to go through. Was a really good trip.

You know the story of the Sun Goddess hiding in the cave? 🌅 The gods came up with a lewd plan to get her out and bring the sun back to the world? 🥳 If you have 2.5 mins, come with me for a little walk [more details in the description]

Good morning 👋 🌅 It’s your Canadian 🇨🇦 dad, walking the kids to school. Last night’s ferry ⛴ back to Iki was a little rough 🌬 🌊 so everyone is feeling a little groggy this morning. Only 2.5 days left in the school year! On Thu we fly ✈️ to Kyoto for Spring Break!

After 6 days on the mainland I am catching the Diamond Iki back to the island. In the distance you can see Karatsu Castle. Still a bit hazy, but much more visible than when I first came last Tuesday.

Sadly nope. We are headed back to Iki now. The best sense of the view we missed I got from this tissue box.

Well that’s a workaround!
The recommendation was to register for a boat, and then spend the next 2 hours walking around until you could get in. Obviously was not like that at all… we paid the ca$h walked down the hill into the boat and were off.

Haha! Wow! Hopefully it wasn’t because you got hit by another boat and fell out

Actually I have a few more pics from today’s adventure I can share:
- selfie above the gorge
- car parked beside me at the jinja - the guy caught me photographing and wasn’t too happy so I drove away quickly in case he was in the mood to “expel the barbarians”

Pretty spectacular. On this trip I have driven oceanside inaka, plains inaka, foothills inaka, volcano caldera inaka, and alpine inaka. 田舎オンパレード!

We drove out of Minami-aso and the giant caldera of the volcano, through some really rugged mountains that reminded me of driving to my hometown, visited a bunch of places, then back up and into the volcano and now we are on the north side of Mt Aso. Tomorrow is Volcano Museum 🌋

Today’s adventure (no 🧵 since making sure 2 kids don’t fall down a gorge kept me from Twitter)
Takachiho Gorge > Takachiho Jinja > Amanoiwato
This is where the first emperor of Japan is said to have descended from Heaven… biggest of the #kyushufirsts!

Not a problem here… There were lots of people bumping into us! It was pouring rain, I had 8yo in the back, 11yo in the front both holding umbrellas… couldn’t see a THING until we got under that lip and I could take this selfie.

CURRENT STATUS: Drove up and thru the caldera, then down and into the Land of the Gods. Now I am rowing a boat down the gorge

The temple was heavily damaged during the floods 3 years ago. So when they rebuilt they made this fancy 宿坊 as an alternate revenue stream.

Good morning! Some quick shots of the volcano caldera from our temple before too much rain and cloud coke in (sorry for the janky pano, I was juggling an umbrella and was in my 作務衣). You can see that it is pretty low, but MASSIVELY wide. Better pics later today when we head up
