Reading about a Japanese pirate collective that fought against the Mongols, prepping for my trip to Matsuura and Hirado next week. That will either put you to sleep right away, or keep you up with excitement! 😂

At the beginning I was like “Where did Rich source a clip of a tanuki snuffling!?” then I was like “OMG!” and then the buttons I was like “NO WAY!?” And then when he says “sNaRFy c0Ld” I was like “waitaminit… when was this ep published!?”
Totally got me. It was great!

OMG for a LONG time! Was catching up on podcasts today after traveling so didn’t make the connection. “I worried about him being famous” timed well. I was all “THERSA IS THE MOST TRUSTWORTHY PERSON AND THIS IS INCREDIBLE!” You had me until he pushes the “cold” button 👏 😂 👏

Good morning ☀️ from Shimabara Castle! Let’s take a quick walk around the top and see the city. Across the water is Kumamoto. Behind us is the collapsed Mt Mayu and just peeking out behind her is Fugen-dake, the volcano. 1/2

Really enjoyed the history museum in Kuchinotsu. The kancho is a super nice guy and we had a wide-ranging conversation on Japanese history. But I swear you take your life in your hands driving across the bridge to the facility!

Ferry arrives in Kuchinotsu. In 1579 a Portuguese ship arrived here carrying Yasuke, the legendary “black samurai” who would go on to serve as a retainer to Oda Nobunaga.

Some pics from the ruins, which is now mostly grasslands and farms. Even the stones had been destroyed by shogunate forces. 40,000 were killed. Here is Unzen from the castle, a monument, statue of Amakusa Shirō, and an informative sign.

Lovely view at sundown from the ruins of Hara Castle, where Christian forces led by a teenage messiah made their last stand in the Shimabara Rebellion. The shogunate finished them off in 1638, with cannon support by the Dutch 1/2
