Chernobyl is brilliant. Hard to binge.
We watched Fukushima 50 with Watanabe Ken on TV the other week. The special effects are pretty low grade, but it can jerk some tears

Last year they had cut back on the number of ships. Right now there are more than then, but still not up to pre-Corona. Normally we get quite a bit of traffic with the planes etc. The problem is wind: 欠航 happens quite often.

Lots of people in Fukuoka pop over for a weekend getaway. Locals will take the jetfoil to FUK in the morning, shop, have a nice dinner, see a show, and take the late ferry back. It is pretty close, for being a “remote” island.

If you drive across the island (about 20mins) you can see Tsushima on the horizon. Not quite in this video, but it is still cool!

The best beaches on Iki (which are in the Top 100 White Sand Beaches of Japan) are right beside the airport, so I can’t take my drone down there. (But I know some people do, like this guy!)

Apparently by weather. Until those rooves went up, these things were exposed to the wind and rain for a 1000 years. The stone come from old lava flows from Aso, so I don’t think it is that hard.

Did I mention that the Usuki Stone Buddhas are in this super-cute little valley? Here is the view that Dainichi Nyorai sees.
Folklore says the Buddhas were carved in memoriam of a much beloved “Princess Hannya” who died a tragic death at 19. See the ❤️? That’s new obviously 😁

A: LAZERS! Well, technically ultraviolet rays. The restoration team has treated one side with a ray which destroys the moss but not the integrity of the stone. The other is scheduled for later this year.

More details of the Usuki Stone Buddhas. See how the bottom of their bodies are eaten away? MOSS! That is one reason why each of the cliff faces is now roofed with shutters for climate control.
Q: Looking L and R of the main Dainichi, why the difference?

A closeup of the Dainichi Nyorai which takes center stage.
Local legend is that sometime in the last 800 years, the head fell perfectly upright on the ground where it sat until they put it back on. You can see the seam across his neck. https://twitter.com/chadkoh/status/1385828825485832193

One of Usuki’s regional products of pride is shoyū 醤油 (soy sauce). They continue a 300 year tradition of using wooden barrels to get that special flavour. Nowadays these industrial size wooden tanks are up to 9 meters tall!

The 12th century Usuki Stone Buddhas were the first National Treasures identified in Kyushu. 59 statues carved in sets around a very pretty little valley. Below you can see the restoration, with all the Buddha heads put back.
