I haven’t watched it in years, but I keep coming back to the soundtrack. Other than the Heart Sutra references from Tsunetomo, are there any other Buddhist bits I should look out for upon rewatch?

Oh man now I am going back to an earlier era of my musical taste. When I was about 12 I was hospitalized for a week in Cranbrook BC with only my Kool Moe Dee tapes and a big book of Far Side comics that someone got me.

@AfroAsianMythos Oh hey, I just remembered something I wanted to ask while I was listening to your podcast: do you cover Ghost Dog at all in your work? There is a LOT going on in that film/album and I would be interested in peeling back those layers.

“Tonbi” — or black-eared kite — are a raptor 🦅 found all over #ikijima #壱岐
I love the kanji for tonbi 鳶 which is a combination of the kanji for “bird” and “arrow”
We made some tonbi friends while fishing in front of our house. The kids loved watching them swoop down!

Robots!? Well I will give it a try anyways. Was looking forward to the Chadwick Boseman version but… 📿
I have many thoughts on this book and am drafting a review now as part of a travel report to Kuchinotsu, the port where he arrived in Japan. In a word it is “goodish”

Yes, I am looking for an overview of the whale oil business until Western ships arrived and basically wiped everything out, so this might be just the book. Thank you!

I remember hearing Jakobina Arch on the @meijiat150 podcast with @TristanGrunow.
Do you know if she (or someone else) covers the whale oil industry and its impact on Japan? (I say this as someone in the Iki+Hirado area which was big in that biz)
