Nice soundtrack. Must have been a very calm day to get your drone up so high and smoothly do the 360. I got a drone for Iki but the wind on an island is brutal and I can barely fly the thing.

Nice 360 of a corner of Japan you might no see that often. I love the position of the houses in the trees, backed by the mountains, with the open rice fields on the Japan Sea. The size and look of the houses are so different too! https://twitter.com/TBeanpod/status/1390825941291569154

WARNING: This is a time lapse to be totally clear. Get a better sense of the speed in the previous video of her coming into port.
Jetfoils go about 80km/hr, which is really fast for a boat. However, if the waves are too high it can’t travel and the line is cancelled.

Up above the old oil shop neighbourhood, along the cliff, is a whale grave. See @AikeRots for more. A few meters away where the brush is low you get this view. https://twitter.com/chadkoh/status/1390509780557389824

Walking paths I have never been on. Surprised at this view of Kuyoshi beach from across the bay. I took a video from up on that cliff yesterday. https://twitter.com/chadkoh/status/1390179819854340102

Calm day, water is clear to the bottom. This is Ebisu. Used to be able to see the whales from shore as they came down for migration (passing L ➡️ R). Whalers would bring them back to those docks. Houses on the hill were once whale oil shops. Kids ate it until the 1940s I’m told

Lovely shot! It was pouring rain when I was there and I had two kids trying to hold up umbrellas while I rowed through there. We ended up just going under the lip on the cliff and I took a couple shots of the falls, but not anything like this 👍

Good point.
I was lucky to pass for Xtian and travel for a few weeks in Iran, which was so amazing, but it means I can never visit Israel (at least that is what I was warned about at the time).
Now I am fearful of visiting China as a Canadian.

@zaichishka Any recommendations for an authoritative history of tea in Japan? Not just of the ceremony, but back to the Nara period. I am thinking something like “Tea in Japan” by Varley… something in that vein.

But for me I think the Buddhas of Bamiyan would be the thing I would have liked to have seen (and existed within my adult lifetime). Hopefully I can make it to Petra before anything happens there!

HK is a good shout. I was there in 1994 and always wanted to go back after handover to see the changes… 😢

Absolutely understandable. Tezuka was outstandingly prolific and it took him 10 years to do Buddha! That is a big project to tackle, especially if you want to teach it. I read the English translation a few years ago. My small review https://chadkohalyk.com/2016/12/14/buddha-the-manga/

Tide is high so the road is closed to Kojima Jinja ⛩, the “romance” shrine. You can take a kayak out to pass under that line torii in the middle of the water. I walked out on the rocks as far as I could go. Wife photographed safely from shore in case I did something stupid. 💗

1 year ago we moved to Iki, passing through Hakata Station which was almost TOTALLY empty. I shudder to think what it is like today. Back then they had daily new case numbers in the low single digits. These days it is in the 200-300 zone 😳 https://twitter.com/chadkoh/status/1257545102710325249
