I was going to drive up there to see if they converted that Poplar too! Happy news! Is it open yet?

Before COVID, who out there travelled from Japan back to Canada (or the US) often? Do you have any travel company recommendations? I am looking for companies that can handle a little complexity, especially for getting to smaller airports from the major hubs. Help?

Oh no! Hopefully it will be okay 🙏
Being bitten by a snake freaks me out. It is one of the negative things about being on this island: lots of snakes and the bugs are HUGE

I know the black ones are harmless in my BRAIN, but my HEART thinks otherwise.
There was an old man (in his 80s?) walking alongside the road and just laughed at me and I was scrambling to get my phone out to take a video. 😂

On the way back from taking the garbage out and a massive 1.5 meter black snake 🐍 crossed the road in front of me! I haven’t seen one that long before. Usually they are like 80cm long. Don’t think I need my morning coffee today (might need a shot of whiskey 🥃 instead)

For comparison here is when the tide is up a bit

Tide is at the lowest of the season so we popped over to Kojima Shrine — the “Romance Island” aka the “Mont-Saint-Michel of Ikijima” — for some sunset photos. Facing East you see the shrine with the 参道 the widest I have ever seen it. To the West the sun sets. #ikijima #壱岐

Indeed.
Also putting the gods out of reach of mortals is a good strategic move. That was my big takeaway in the mountains of old Hyuga.

The whole walk to that cave is amazing. They paved it for tourists which is very helpful because you would need to be a total mountain 行者 to make it up that rough and winding River. Only the gods dwell up there…⛩

Yes. I have been travelling Kyushu (when able) and visiting important historical spots. Part travelogue, part pop-history about Kyushu’s contributions to Japan as a whole. Also trying to ground it heavily in academia.

Here are some very special ricefields that you won’t see everywhere on Instagram: red rice and black rice. These are 古代米 or ancient rice. Each year it is hand-planted in these paddies next to the Yayoi village and you can eat ancient rice bento at the restaurant nearby! 4/4

Being on the ancient route connecting the Japanese archipelago to Japan, Iki is home to lots of archeological wonders. The museum here is first rate, and we have one of Japan’s few Yayoi period village reconstructions. Here is a watchtower at sunset. 3/4

Nagasaki prefecture is extremely hilly. I have written about the tunnels and mountaintop-to-mountaintop bridges before. Ikijima is actually home to the second largest plain in the whole prefecture! And this is on an island you can drive across in 20 mins! 2/4

It is rice planting season. Recently people have been posting their beautiful rice field sunsets. I usually shoot ocean sunsets since I can do it outside my house, but I took a drive to a very special spot tonight to get some shots for you all. Let me tell you about it. 🧵 1/4
