We got here Sunday afternoon, so 3.5 days. We’ll be back. We still have our apartment here and my father-in-law is still here. Once things settle in Canada and the borders re-open we will come and visit. Tho I am not sure when we can MOVE back. 🤷♂️

Some last evening shots of Kyoto as the cloudless sky goes from a clear, brilliant blue to an orangey gradient. City sunsets are nice too! ☺️

IIRC there is a translation scribbled on a note inside the frame, but if anyone can read it I would love to be reminded what it says.

Persian calligraphy, made with bamboo reed pen near Babolsar in northern Iran, 2004. I framed it in camel bone and gave it to my parents-in-law here in Kyoto. It’s still have on display in the living room.

Yep. Iki did’t have much international variety. Fish, fish, fish… they didn’t even have okonomiyaki‼️

Poutine? Ketchup chips? Bannock?
Later they both agreed: Slurpees 😋👍

She answered: 「だんご」 🍡

Yep that could be possible once you pass through Itoshima. There are a lot of little islands in the way across Karatsu bay, but Iki would lay on the horizon. It is only about 30kms away, so if you were up on a hill and it was a clear day I think you could see it no problem.

Yup! Karatsu is one of our three ways off the island. If you go up to Nagoya Castle or to the Hado cape west of Karatsu you can see Iki across the water.

FYI we made it back to Kyoto. We are here for just a few days before taking our PCRs and heading to Vancouver and 2 weeks of quarantine. I will have LOADS of time to process more Iki pics and experiences.

It was VERY unexpected. We had planned on staying until the end of the summer before going back to Kansai for a year, but a family emergency takes me back to 🇨🇦. Leaving Iki was hard, but the decision was easy, if you know what I mean.

Today was our last day on Iki. Our 1 year island study exchange has come to an end.💔 😭 Almost the entire school and neighbourhood turned out to see us off. I am going to miss this place! We now have a second hometown in Japan! 🥰 #ikijima #壱岐

Just realized that Google Maps made custom icons for some of the major spots in Kyoto. Apparently this was released like a year ago. Tokyo has them too, but not Fukuoka or Nagasaki.

The show is so wide-ranging I’ve learned about all sorts of topics/issues in Japan that I normally wouldn’t encounter. Try an ep on a topic that interests you. Didn’t take long for me to sign up as a member. 🤣👍 I can endorse the running jokes/puns that tie all the eps together! https://twitter.com/jbrcpod/status/1399167078628675587
