Are you like a UBC official kid visit planner!? Thank you so much for the suggestions! This will definitely the offset such scenic destinations as “Hey kids this is The Pit where Daddy used to eat cheap hamburgers 20 years ago!” 😅

Yes, we will wander around and check out all the new buildings and admire the architecture, then pop down to Spanish banks for a walk there. Then we will get some boba and eat some good food in the old Richmond neighbourhood like we always do when we come to the coast 😋🙌

OMG I had no idea about this! I wish I had so I could have made a booking. It might not be as good as Harry Potter World at Universal Studios Japan, but is still impressive.

John gave me a copy of that when he visited me in Iki! But I have been so focused on Kyushu I have not read it yet 😅

Actually you might be able to pick up on some cool urban design stuff in there. It won’t as deep as @matthew_stavros’s book on Kyoto (which I still have to read), but there are lots of cool “walking around Kyoto and pointing out details” type stuff. It’s fun.

“Another Kyoto takes a novel approach to introducing the city, through chapters about the types of things you will see: gates, walls, floors, tatami, plaques, fusuma, and screens.”

I haven’t read those for like a million years (and I liked them at the time) but I think AK is a different flavour. It is more like a celebration of Japanese material culture, and not so much with the criticism of you know what I mean. Totally worth tho 💫

I loved Another Kyoto. It was like walking around the city with Alex Kerr.
I‘ve only been to Bangkok a couple of times, but I am looking forward to reading this and taking another walk with him, all the while gaining some unexpected and enjoyable insight. https://twitter.com/BooksOnAsia/status/1410457001679671296

We asked the kids where they wanted to go for a short holiday. They said Hogwarts 🧙♂️ so I brought them to @UBC. We are staying on campus for the next few days and I will take them around to show them all sorts of cool stuff here (did I mention they are 11 and 9? 😅🐯)

Ah, I didn’t walk in there. I was on a strict schedule so stuck to the castle and the art museum. I was surprised to hear Dr. Saaler say that Saga was low on the statues considering how many are sprinkled around that main street, but the economic argument makes sense.

Really enjoyed this Jingyi! Glad you mentioned the statuary of Saga. Here are a couple pics from the 駅前まちかど広場。The first time I saw them was at night out of the corner of my eye. Creepy! 😅
Also Nabeshima in front of the castle, and “something” at the art museum. 🤷♂️
