It was the worst. I still have to write up the whole sordid affair. So many things failed us here in North America.
Btw, I really enjoyed your Patreon message about spending time in the US. I can very much empathize! 日本に帰りたいなぁ😥

No no! I didn’t take that way at all. Just saying I feel your pain, and I REALLY hope you guys get out soon. The kids (11 and 9) were PRETTY bored by the end. 😂 Those extra 5 days were excruciating coz we didn’t know when it would end. Every day we had to wait for new results.

Do you have to do tests on Day 8 or anything like that? Hopefully they don’t lose half the samples forcing the whole family to stay in isolation for 5 more days (like this guy 👍👍

I think that 15m bike ride is just about perfect. You can probably walk it when you can’t ride, or take a bus a few stops if the weather is terrible.
I don’t think I have ever lived more than a half-hour from work. I’d consider more if I only had to go in a couple times a week.

Another possibility is piggybacking off other federated networks. Like, I would maybe try and partner with https://bookshop.org/. They are getting all sorts of catalogue information, and could build a personal tracker and reading recommendation engine from across their network.

Thinking of this more, maybe the way to compete with the “Everything Store” of the GR SNS is to go niche, focus on a subgroup of readers (academics, genre readers, topical) and build a network there. Trick is to find a big enough niche for monetization.

And that it was makes it so hard to compete.
Building an SNS from ground-up is TOUGH. Do you compete by building it off the back of another (eg Twitter)? Seems dangerous.
I would love to imagine a good GR Alt, but all I can think of are the problems. Maybe I am too cynical…

It’s amazing that I don’t use Facebook but I am totally locked into GR.
I have tried many of the alts, the “Quantified Self” tracking can easily be replicated, but it is the network effect of GR’s social graph that keeps me there: ie seeing what everyone else is reading.

Father-in-law took a little walk around some of the Gion floats on display in downtown Kyoto and sent me some pics.
The festival has been going on since 869 and has grown into quite the spectacle.
Here is the famous Naginata-hoko.

One resource she points out is http://japandirectory.socialsciences.hawaii.edu/Default.aspx which is pretty amazing, but unfortunately out of date. I browsed the “local” talent and was shocked to see so many 70-90yo listed! Where are the younger scholars?
