Just sent the latest monthly newsletter. It is a personal note, mostly to people I know, with a bit of a review and links to things I have made (or been impressed with) across the internets. You can see the most recent one below, and browse the archive.

So windy this morning 🌬️ worried about the jetfoil from #ikijima . But even though the seas were rough, there was only 1 real big bump on our way to Hakata. I feel fine! 😊👍Plus we had a bunch of people see us off at the dock 🥰🥰🥰
Now heading back to Kyoto. See you next year!

Last morning on #ikijima. We went to the island elementary school futsal tournament to cheer on our little buddies! This is the same field where sheep 🐑 🐑 graze on the sidelines.

To the left of the shrine out in the water is Sakyōbana, one of the Heavenly Pillars of Iki. This is where they fly the demon kites

We were super lucky to time our trip with the big neighbourhood Trick Or Treat event! 🎃 All the local kids got dressed up 👻 and we went door-to-door where they yelled “TRICK OR TREAT!!!” and then went for the 🍬 like piranhas. 😂 It was high tension and hilarious!

And another surprise since we left Iki: someone started a banana farm! 🍌 They sell organic bananas so fresh “you can eat the skin”. Also lots of nana leaf products like serving platters, wallets, and purses. The greenhouse got damaged in the recent typhoon.

Another surprise for us on Iki! A new bakery named チャド!The owners were just as surprised as me, so we took a photo together. The store is named after the country (an interesting story). Their bread and cookies are 😋 Next time I will get the Baumkuchen (my fav)

Coming back to #ikijima after leaving so suddenly is pretty amazing. Everyone is so warm and welcoming! Visited a bunch of people today with souvenirs. Also caught up with my “office” view (when I would work out of my car at the ocean viewpoint) and spectacular sunsets! 🌅

Took a walk along the beach. The sound of waves 🌊 lapping against the shore is so healing. And I love the green-ness of the water at this time of year. Fascinated by all the tiny shells 🐚 that the waves collect on the beach. Took a moment to notice the little things. #ikijima

This is Ohama, a nice family friendly beach on #ikijima. I am standing on a little peninsula. The ocean water in the fishing port on the left has a totally different colour than the white sand beach on the right.

Today was excellent.😊 Working with the principal we snuck into the school we attended in 20-21 via the back entrance, then surprised everyone at assembly! Then we walked home together and the kids all played until sundown. Now I think everyone on the island knows we are here‼️

Correction, this gate is from the Kaneishi Castle which was a lower castle. Shimizu was a mountaintop castle that you can see the ruins from here. They are not the same castle. I regret the error!

Made it partway down the island. Here is a famous local shrine Watatsumi. There are 3 torii ⛩️ lined up out into the water (5 if you count the shrine grounds). One was knocked down during a typhoon and preserved. Crawl under it for your wish to come true! 🧞♂️

So we stopped at the Conservation center and saw a real live mountain cat!
