I just watched this and it is striking how Debussy’s late period is so… dark.

Just discovered this podcast and the first two eps feature an excellent conversation with Robert Stoltz on Tosaka Jun, the “rogue” member of the Kyoto School. His analysis of the relationship between fascism and liberalism from the 1930s has some clear echoes to this day. https://twitter.com/againstjapanism/status/1378572645025914881

It definitely takes a little getting used to. Like when the first smartphones came out and the battery wouldn’t last all day. Oh wait, they STILL don’t last all day! 😂

I need to catch up on my #NowReading2021. In May, with my sudden departure from Japan looming, I started listening to “The Emperor of All Maladies” by Siddhartha Mukherjee. I finished it just 4 days before my dad passed away from metastatic lung cancer

Of course, this just scratches the surface, and I don’t get into the negatives of over-planning, or inability to switch plans at the last moment (ahem Japan), but it was carthatic to write. I’d love to hear your views as someone who has spent much longer than me in Japan.
