I walked to the cave where the gods hatched their wacky plan, and it was breath-taking. It is in Takachiho, Miyazaki. If you don’t mind spoilers, or aren’t planning on seeing it yourself, here are the last few mins and the reveal in high def https://youtu.be/NIMF7Z9PsUc https://twitter.com/nippon_en/status/1428038984437878784

I have been pour over for a few years now. I need to get back on the Aeropress bandwagon. Good for travel, and the wastage is minimal. I got rid of my ceramic filter because cleanup was just too much https://youtu.be/FvOv0uDQPE0

… has anyone written a survey on the effects of depopulation in Japan? For example with chapters on: agriculture, governance, economy, health, housing, taxes, military (as per below). I know of Kinoshita’s work, but… What can other advanced economies learn from Japan’s xp? https://twitter.com/chadkoh/status/1425326370079477762

Another interesting podcast featuring the effects of depopulation on land use, and how the countryside is coming up with new forms of farming cooperatives to maintain productive land. It makes me wonder… https://twitter.com/jannohentzsch/status/1425530438030958602

Production value certainly counts. Most people are sick of the old “two white guys and a mic” pattern. The other is the marketing aspect: the framing of the show and making sure the right people know about it. That’s where a network can help, but even some good FB placements…

Yes, Stak is much smaller. Pete and Luke have been podcasting for a long time and got into the network biz only the last couple of years. Might be easier to get feedback from them than some place like Gimlet 🤷♂️

How has your other biz exploring gone? Have you talked to networks like Stak (which is who Chris Broad is with I am pretty sure)? They do a lot of channel marketing to build audience. Automated ads are crap, but Terrie could pull off a good spooky ad read if it was the right fit!

Iki is on the “edge of Japan”, a vital security area with many incursions from Chinese ships. One day my daughter came home from her Grade 5 class with a recruitment pamphlet for the Coast Guard. Are they that aggressive elsewhere, or just on The Edge?

Houses used to not have air conditioning. They went from window units to centralized air, now the requirement will be air purifiers everywhere. This is the new way…

That was the cheapest and fastest option we could find. The airport option was I think ¥14,000 but was too risky. I found a mail-in one for ¥10,000 but that too was too risky.

One more thing: @profTLe discusses the difference in peace Ed in Nagasaki. I experienced this first hand at my kids 文化祭 on Iki. The Gr 6s we’re doing some intense stuff that shocked my Kansai-based family. It is anecdotal, but they take things seriously in Nagasaki.

Excellent point on how the population crisis constrains the Japanese military. Also, his explanation of “peace culture” (similar to what I called “strategic culture” in my thesis so many years ago) is very succinct! Great episode 👏 https://twitter.com/JapanOTR/status/1425230746243850243
