Popped down to the lake close to Carr’s Landing and across the lake you can see a little smoke cresting over the hill above Fintry, but otherwise things look pretty nice. Hopefully everyone is okay over there!

If I moved closer to the shore and had open sea and no sea walls, you would have gotten more of an abstract liquid metal look. But of course, I could not change the angle of the light. A better crop? Bokeh? I dunno, plz gimme suggestions. Otherwise I will just keep staring. /fin

This is a full colour image, no filters or desaturation. The orange of the sunrise offsets that silvery steel colour of the water. So different from the gold of yesterday’s sunrise! I just needed to capture this sight. I have folders of photos of the sea in different colours. 3/4

During my year in the island I would sit and marvel at the water, listening to it constantly touching the shore — sometimes lovingly, sometimes angrily. The sea is temperamental, you can see it in the array of shades and hues it shows you! 2/4

Day 7 on @tryglass: Waves of emotion
I was 12 the first time I saw the ocean (I grew up in the Rocky Mountains). Living on the island of #ikijima #壱岐 exposed me to many new lessons of island living. One of the most stark was how many colours the ocean can be. 1/4

Agree agree! But maybe the word is not “lazy” but “not being paid to prioritize my time to get this specific shot” 😉
Another big difference is kids. WAAAYYYY more focused on “instants” when travelling with kids! 😂
Thanks for the comment 🙇♂️

Have you been to Takachiho before? We drove from Minami-aso. It was a lovely drive through the mountains. Bit far from Saga and Fukuoka but totally worth going once.

I love the sort of Ivy League drawl he writes in. He just brings you along, doesn’t he? I recall an IR scholar who recently praised historians based simply on “they are just better writers!” and I am inclined to agree 😂

A million people have taken this exact photo, so it isn’t anything special. But I bet you could make something truly wonderful if you came at the right time, with the right weather, proper tripod etc. 3/4

I think this is probably the reason why I am not that great at photography. I can frame a shot, and maybe capture a moment, but I cannot *compose* one.
This place is magical. It had been raining, and about 20 mins before this pic I was the guy down in that boat! 2/4

Takachiho Gorge for @tryglass Day 6
I mostly take photos of instants. It is not often I can sit and wait for the perfect light or the perfect weather. It is usually just a snap… and I miss more than I successfully capture! 1/4

Also #NowReading2021 “Maritime Asia vs. Continental Asia: National Strategies in a Region of Change” by the eminent professor Takashi Shiraishi. I started reading it under my deck sail so I could get more of a shanty feel. I must report that there is no rum 🍹on this deck. 🙅♂️

The picture was just one of those lucky moments, like street photography. I took it in Portrait Mode with my iPhone to get the bokeh. If the sand was a little more clear then it would be better. But other than that, I am pretty satisfied at the capture. 3/4

The sunset was casting a nice glow on these footprints, and the tide had not washed the memories away just yet. I am no tracker, so I cannot tell, but I like to imagine the seagulls were there and the child ran towards them, casting them into the sky. 🦅 2/4

You may be more familiar with the peace statue in Nagasaki. Many public ceremonies are held in the park where it resides. It is a very striking image. I wrote about the artist after visiting his childhood home here http://chadkohalyk.com/2021/04/26/creating-the-image-of-peace-kitamura-seibo/

I snapped a bunch of pics to catch the flags at full extension. It probably would have been better to catch it from a different angle so all the kanji wasn’t backwards, but I couldn’t really walk out on the water to the other side of the boat! 3/4

One very windy day while taking a friend on a boat tour of some outer islands, we were lucky to see many fishing boats flying their trophy flags. 🏆(We also saw about 30 navy sailors riding around on scooters, but that’s a different story). 🛵 2/4

That’s what I figured. I am trying to find more info on neighbourhoods putting up a fight where I can get an apartment and raise my kids, and catch the bus/train to the university and not own a car, and shop locally. Does any such neighbourhood exist anymore in Van?

This is the area I would like to move to in Vancouver. But isn’t it being gentrified with the new Skytrain stations and buildings going in around Main? I dunno if we can get in there before prices skyrocket (if they haven’t already)
