I try to capture a whole emotional year of living on #ikijima #壱岐 in just 3000 words

Yup. It was one of the reasons we went to Japan last year, to give the kids exposure to a different system that approaches learning with a very different model. You would not beleive the change I saw after a month! And it seems like they reverted instantly once they got back 😭

There has been so much disorganization in dealing with all the school systems here, and I don’t think you can chalk it all up to the pandemic. I would love to do a “customer journey” audit, so many opportunities to improve a crucial service and cut down on student/parent stress.

07:30 email from @SD23News “our bus routes in your area are operating at full capacity … Your application has been placed on our wait list”
08:30 in traffic after dropping my kid at school, a new email “welcome to your new Route Assignment!” WTF? 🤦♂️

Recently I have gotten into André Alexis. His prose is very simply constructed, but the way he spins out a story is just captivating. Try “Fifteen Dogs.” It is short, but will make you want to write! 😊

More dramatic lighting is a good shout. That place is really nice during golden hour, but I don’t have many shots from then. From up on the cliff https://flic.kr/p/2jQ1AHt

I like this pic for the dynamism, but I kind of think there is too much going on. Maybe I should have focused the dept of field around the splash… but then you couldn’t see the heavenly glory of the finger 🤔
How would you improve this shot?

But that tide coming in was key to my goal: to shoot some foamy splash as the waves crashed against Sakyōbana, the Pillar of Heaven, a famous “power spot” on #ikijima #壱岐

Splash, Day 12 on @tryglass
I climbed down the cliff, scrabbling over the coastal rocks to get a nice low angle, my wife looking on uninterested from a safe distance above. The tide was rising and the dry, non-slippery tops of the rocks were quickly shrinking. 1/3

I was watching @FukuokaNow’s walkthrough vid on YouTube. I ate dinner up in that tower just a few months ago! Surprised to hear it was getting torn down! Had a weird ping of nostalgia even tho I have only been in it like 3 times.

3 days before my thesis submission that my laptop fell off the coffee table (errant earphone cable) and onto THICK CARPET floor and yet it still BROKE. Luckily we had online backups back in 2007. PHEW! Only lost a page and a day of my time.

The other option is shoot both, and just delete the RAW for anything that doesn’t need post-production to save space. I need to move to that workflow.

The backlighting is pretty extreme so when I bring up the Shadows the whole thing takes on sorta neon look, which is a bit weird, but retains the sky colour. I don’t shoot RAW very often since I don’t like spending a lot of time in post-production. I make it up in volume! 😉 3/3

The sky was amazing, but I could only get a portion of it in from the position I was standing (there are trees behind me). And I didn’t notice the sign at the bottom! I might have stepped right a bit to hide it behind one of the pillars. 🤦♂️ 2/3

Day 11 on @tryglass: Watchful
The Gishiwajinden, a section of the Wei Chronicles (3rd C BCE), is the earliest known record the land of Wa, aka Japan. This reconstructed watchtower is on the site of the capital of Ikkikoku, a Yayoi polity dating back a couple thousand years. 1/3

I took a few shots trying to capture the intersecting lines as the sun went down. The effect is much more apparent with the movement of the waves, so maybe a video would have been better? I would love to have taken this with a drone from a higher angle.

Confluence, Day 10 of @tryglass
A tetrapod wall calms the waves coming into the bay at Kuyoshi on #ikijima #壱岐, making it safe for swimming. As the tide rises and waves come in from the left and right of the wall, waves meet in the middle, causing a pleasant pattern.

Morning meditation: Impermanence
This bronze statue was gifted to me by a CEO in Mumbai. I think he was surprised to meet a fellow traveller. Buddhists account for less than 1% of the population in India. I am very grateful for this statue. It has a prominent seat in my home.

Not a particularly meaningful image, just a great opportunity to capture relatively undisturbed white sand ripples. I learned from this that you can take all sorts of different kinds of “beach sunset” images.
