I appreciate the question about pan-Asianism often being relegated to Japanese instrumentalism. There are some very interesting looking chapters in here, thanks for bringing this book to my attention! 🙇♂️

Haha! I would never question your journalistic integrity. Enjoyed your analysis and your framework. I am partial to Nagoya and especially Kyoto just because that is where I spent most of my time. I will return to Kyoto again someday. It is such a great city once you know people!

Back home after 12.5 hours of driving. So wiped. 🥱 I know I am supposed to be fasting but I need some comfort food before hitting bed, so Frosted Flakes, peppered salmon jerky, and salty cashews it is. Happy Thanksgiving! 🇨🇦 🦃

Nagoya is a really comfortable place to live. I enjoyed my 4 years there. Glad it ranked 4th in this analysis, but it should have gotten bonus points since @ericdmargolis lives there now! 😉 https://twitter.com/UnseenJapanSite/status/1447321530866745347

Left Vancouver to sunny skies, and luckily the Coquihalla pass only had a little snow on the hills, but there was a big dump between Merritt and Kamloops. We made it through to blue skies in the other side!

Yup. Apparently historians would call it “The Iron Butcher” to play it down, but props to the Cannery museum for facing it head on. Not something we should forget.

3/3 I first learned about this machine a few years ago when I saw David HT Wong talk about his new book, a “graphic history of the Chinese in North America.” But today I got to see it with my own eyes, displayed right at the entrance of the cannery museum. https://ricepapermagazine.ca/2016/06/book-review-escape-to-gold-mountain/

2/3 But the cannery owner fired them all and replaced them with a machine that could clean a fish every second. Look at the name of the Canadian-invented device, located near the top above the circular part:

At the Steveston fish cannery at the turn of the 20th C, the Chinese butchers working on the line could clean 10 fish a minute each, before sending the meat on for canning. The butchers were named the “Singing Knives” and paid $17 a month for their skill. (1/3)

I mean, MAYBE if it was a hospice? 😅 Nope, nope, I say strike it down. We need better hospital hold music. Home On The Range doesn’t seem that appropriate either. Isn’t that about like cowboy Valhalla?

Okay so this Japanese phone hold music is like a chip-tune version of “Let it Be” which I don’t think is appropriate for a hospital amirite? 😳
