Would anybody be interested in learning Japanese Tea Ceremony online from a tea teacher based in Kyoto in English?
I have an accomplished tea teacher friend who is thinking of expanding his online lessons.

This was a nice collab between Nick and Shatrunjay for @NewBooksNetwork, interviewing a fascinating scholar.
A few years ago on a visit to Maizuru, and the Japanese Naval shipyard there, I stopped in at the “hikiage” museum https://m-hikiage-museum.jp which was pretty… intense. https://twitter.com/msherzodm/status/1509464589775298564

We figured Maruyama and Tetsugaku-no-michi would be packed today, so took the girls to Kinkakuji and Ritsumeikan, our alma mater. That area is not much for Sakura so pretty dead.

It wasn’t bad at all at Kinkakuji. A lot more than last year at the height of Corona, but nothing like the Before Times. Very easy to social distance. Now at Hirano and it is not bad here either.

Day 3 of isolation so we can get a PCR test to finish it early (otherwise it is 7 days). You must go in your own car directly to the clinic then back home. But this is Kyoto, so even on the road you can sightsee 😊 Here is the always impressive Higashi Honganji gate. No 🌸 yet.

I am still on a spouse visa until 2023. When we left to Canada last summer I got a re-entry visa.
That said, the children and spouses of Japanese nationals are supposed to be okay to enter.

Yes! We actually didn’t wait as long as all the horror stories. We landed at 4pm and were out of the airport at 6:30.

Lol I notice that the third row is actually Option 2. But you can see that you need a total of three tests before you are free IF you want to fast-track and get out in 3 days. Otherwise you self isolate for 7

My other tip for you is that this can take HOURS. Bring some granola bars. BUT don’t eat or drink anything once you get off the plane. You have to be clean for 30m before your spit test. After the test, in the waiting area, there is a vending machine for drinks.

Yep, this is the same. We are option 3. I am boosted but my kids aren’t (not due until May) so we have to do the 3 days at home.

Do you have your MySOS? You get tested 72 hours before arrival (NAAT is okay), then upon arrival you do a spit test, then if you are double-vaxxed you self-isolate for 3 days and then do ANOTHER test (which you pay for) to go free. If you are boosted then no need to self isolate.

Currently we are sitting in a designated waiting area listening to a voice over a broken mic drone out Covid sample numbers. We wait with hundreds of others in a long hallway. We landed 2 hours ago, and still have customs and baggage ahead, assuming our results are negative. 🤞

When we moved back to Canada last summer, I commented on how the normally welcoming Vancouver airport had drastically changed. Now, I am back in Japan after 287 days, and Narita airport is transformed.
